Dance Syllabus & Contract
Dance Education is the exploration of movement creativity. We will explore the styles of dance used in both social and concert forms. This class is based on the Modern dance movement for the public school system, not Hip Hop. This form of learning movement and classroom environment are very different from a dance studio environment although the essentials are the same. (However, as the levels progress the environment becomes more similar to the studio concept.) We will explore and create classical concert forms of dance such as ballet and study the works of various choreographers. We will also explore and get acquainted with our bodies through Pilates and Yoga and the study of creative movement.

Dance EtiquetteDance performance, both in the classroom and on stage, requires self-discipline. Therefore a few guidelines are essential. Dance is communication through movement, this means when performing; there is NO talking unless speech is part of the performance! When working with others you must respect everyone’s opinion and space. There is a limited amount of space, so it must be shared willingly! No chewing gum, food, candy, or beverages (other than plain water) during rehearsal or performance this means the in classroom and auditorium. Class IS rehearsal so always perform to your highest standard. When participating as the audience, always be respectful of the performers. Remember to give positive feedback and applaud their effort. Everyone wants to have fun so remember to practice your etiquette!!!

Dance is a Contact Sport
In dance class you need to understand that you will come into constant contact with other members of the class in order to create interesting choreography. All contact is strictly within the confines of the assignment guidelines. This creates a trusting environment and encourages exploration of movement through personal ability. There will also be times that, as the teacher, I will make contact for demonstration purposes or to make form and alignment corrections and/or adjustments. These are made to prevent permanent long term damage that can occur by improper alignment when dancing. As the instructor, it is my job to try to prevent such effects as much as possible.  All contact is appropriate and is carefully monitored. Anyone that has an issue should immediately report it to the teacher. Also, if you don’t like to be touched at all please tell me so that contact can be prevented.

Grades
All grades in this class carry equal weight, except the final. It will be calculated according to school policy. Students are graded daily on class participation, attitude, dress out, quality and contribution of work, rate of improvement, and cooperation with group members. Students that choose not to participate in class will be given a written final paper as their exam. Also, students that do not participate for a day will receive a chapter assignment out of the text, answer all questions and write a one page summary of the chapter. There are few written assignments however; I do expect all assignments to be completed and handed in on time! For each day an assignment is late it will be docked half of a letter grade. I will not take work one week after the original due date. Failure to turn in assignments will greatly affect your grade! The unspoken everyday homework assignment is to practice. Be responsible for your own actions! I will not change grades, due to purposeful oversight on your part! All dances created through the semester will be performed in the concert. I very much expect you to remember them all!!! (Review is held every Friday.)

Final
The final exam for this class will be an after school concert performance at the end of the semester. Any student who chooses not to participate in class will not be allowed to perform in the concert!!! The date and time will be announced at a later time. Concert t-shirts will be ordered about a month in advance, they range from $13-16. Shirts must be paid for at the time of the order. I only order the number of t-shirts that have been prepaid; there will not be extras!! There will be at least one required after school or Saturday rehearsal for the concert. The rehearsal is part of your final grade. Anyone who does not participate in the concert for whatever reason will be assigned a 6 page research paper. The subject is to be agreed upon by both parties and the assignment is to be completed by the date of the official class final. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade!

Dress
Dressing out can be defined as the removal of school apparel and replacing it with active wear. This does not mean putting sweat pants over jeans!!! That is not dressing out!!!
Dance 1
Clothing should include comfortable pants or capris (no shorts, hip huggers, leggings w/ shorts over them, or sag and drag) and a school appropriate t-shirt or sweat shirt. No tank or spaghetti strap tops! Clothing will get dirty as we do roll around on the floor and sweat.
Dance 2 and up
Ladies- leotard and tights with dance pants, shorts, or capris over them, you may wear a fitted tank top over your leotard. A warm-up sweater is also acceptable.
Gentlemen- Athletic style warm up pants and fitted t-shirt or tank.
All
Hair should be pulled back off the face and street shoes, socks, bulky clothing and jackets/coats should be removed. Failing to dress out will result in a deduction of points for the day.
